fender trim removal

i have a 2002 Tahoe and have been tossing around the idea of removing the plastic trim pieces on the fenders. Has anybody had success with this? My biggest concern would be if there are holes behind the top of the pieces that would require fill and paint. any advice would be appreicated. Thanks
