Electric conversion?

Hummm... been thinking...

How would someone go about converting SUVs to Electric?

Even if you make an adapter to for the bell housing to the electric motor to hook it up to the transmission, you still have accessories such as AC, brake booster and power steering.

Not that I'd actually build one.... not yet at least, how would you over come this? And where would you get a DC electric motor that can put out around 300 bhp?

I think it would take one HUGE battery and a Hella long charge time to get a Tahoe moving with only electricity! :Chevy:

Not one huge battery, several, several, several 12V batteries... run in series and parallel (Depending on voltage.) Remove the gas tank and put a tray there to hold a dozen or so batteries. Trunk can hold a layer of batteries too. Suspension should be able to hold everything, if not, it'll be easy to upgrade the suspension to support the weight of the batteries and huge motor.

Not that I've been thinking about this...:D

So basically a Tahoe version of the Tesla... Sounds possible, and exspensive. At least your thinking positive:thumbsup:! :Chevy:

my little 2 seater golf cart has 10 12v car batterys and i can only get a top speed of 30 mph and it will only last about 8 hours a charge, if ran or left on, it needs to charge every night. so your going to need a semi truck trailer for the field of batterys needed to get the tahoe to move.

man, you would need a huge bank of lithium batteries to prevent the golf-cart scenerio mentioned above.

Golf carts are not designed to go much more than a fast walking speed. If you have one that goes 30 it has been modified.

I work with someone who was involved in developing electric cars when he was in college. He has converted a Ford Escort to run on electric, and it uses 12 12v batteries. Top speed is about 80mph, and will run for about 60 miles. The number of batteries required for a full-sized suv would depend on the electric motor you use, as much as the weight of the vehicle. But you would need at least 24 12v batteries, and you would not have much range. Converting an suv to fully electric really isn't feasible with the current battery technology. But my information is dated, as my co-worker has been out of school for about 10 years.

dude, its stock, i bought it brand new from yamaha. it has a 45mph speedo and i can get it to 30 on a flat street with just me, we use it to tow stuff around the out side of the house, and around the neighborhood, worked great during holoween when tricker treating, with the little ones.

we went to a little island for spring break last year, North Captiva island, in florida, and they only allow golf carts, the rental ones we had got up to about 20 even with 4 people on them, i mean golf carts go alot faster than ya think now.

yea your right, the one we have is designed for towing and hills, an electric car just hauls people.

lower gears get you to top speed much quicker but have a much lower top speed

higher gears get you to top speed much slower, but have a much higher top speed.
