Intermediate steering shaft

If my steering wheel makes a clunking noise as I turn steering wheel and gradually making that same sound even when I am not turning wheel is that being caused by steering shaft only or something else? If that's the problem, will I ever have to worry about losing control of steering while driving on the road please advise?
