One of my cats went bad, I took it to a local muffler shop and they cut out both cats and welded up 2 aftermarket cats for about 275$. If you want to find out which one is bad, get you one of those temperature guns and take a temp of them after you have run the truck for a while.
A local muffler shop cut out my 2 cats and replaced them with 2 high flow cats for $250. My 2002 is running much better, she has about 98,000 miles on her. I was getting a code about catalyst below threshold, or something. The Tahoe would rev but not accelerate when gunning it, it was almost...
I replaced my wheel bearing assembly with the Napa part for my 2002 Tahoe. The part cost me around $140 bucks and it was a breeze to install yourself if your somewhat handy.
I did the same thing, I could not get the pan to drop because of the linkage bracket. I did not have the torx size needed so I took a big arse screwdriver and wedged it in between the bracket and the pan and forced the bracket out about half an inch and the pan dropped. After the filter change...
The cats are unrelated to the coolant problem but in my case the service engine light was on and the code read catalyst below threshold. The tahoe ran like crap and when you accelerate it just wouldn't go like it was constipated.
My 2002 Tahoe had a coolant leak for a couple of years and I could never pin point it. It was a slight leak that left no pooling but I did have small orange(rusty looking) stains spattered on the driveway. I would have to add about a half gallon of water every month or so due to the low...
I am not sure about the 2001 but my 2002 Tahoe 2wd had a grinding type noise from the left front and I figured it was the bearings so one morning I went out to change and repack the bearings but I found out quick that it was a sealed unit and I had to replace the hub/wheel bearing assembly. I...
Did mine also for around 17 bucks with the Puralator brand. Took me a beer or so to figure out where it was. Removed the kick panel and dropped the trap door, man it was filthy.
Yes that was my total bill, I figure it cost them 60 or 70 bucks per cat and a hundred bucks to weld it up. I thought it was going to be more from what I had been reading on the web.
The exact error code I had was:
P0420
Catalyst Efficiency below threshold
and boy was it........
Update:
I tried beating on the cats with a hammer, they must have really been clogged because it got worse a few day's later. As it got warmer the truck would not hardly run up to 20 mph. and ran real rough. I limped it too the muffler shop and they cut out the cats and welded up 2 new ones...
I need to change mine. I am still with the original, 5 years I think it is time. Where did you all get the filter? Is it something I should be able to pickup at a Autozone or Advance auto parts?
