It was the output shafshaft on the transmission. About 3/4 of the splines were gone. Trans tech said it's only the 2nd time he has ever seen it. New trans and converter and it's quiet as can be now.

This is my sisters Tahoe and in park/neutral the engine is quiet. You can rev the engine lightly or hard and it sounds fine. When you put the thing in drive or reverse it starts slowly sounding like a diesel. All kinds off clattering. The noise comes and goes and the engine occasionally stalls...

Did you ever find out what the noise was? My sisters is doing the same thing and I cant figure it out.

We have 4 kids and we have decided to put one in. Any advice? I will be doing it myself and would prefer something fairly clean and simple (simple as can be). Thanks for any info.
