You need a $40 module to install the new stereo. Unless you dont mind loosing the chime sounds and RAP (retained accessory power), then you can wire it up like an other stereo.
Either way, you dont have to relocate the relocate the factory radio.
Cosmetically. A transmission temperature gauge, higher mph on the speedo and a different gauge surround.
If you want one, they're plug and play.
I have a Denali cluster in my 2001 Suburban.
I've replaced the one with the ball inside to the fixed orifice style on my 2001 Suburban, 2002 Tahoe and a friends 2000 Sierra, 2002 Escalade and 2004 Suburban.
Aftermarket is the only option. No possibility of putting an OEM one from a newer model on it either. Just stick with a brand name unit. I've had goot luck with DEI (Clifford, Avatal, Viper, Python), Crimestopper and Compustar.

I had this unit in my 01 Suburban, but upgraded to the dual din version. The single din is now in my Saturn. When it was in the Suburban, I remove the shift laver, put it in my vise and slightly bent it. You dont need to bend it much. And the screen cleared the handle. You cant even tell I did...
I did this mod a couple years ago. I picked up a brand new OEM electric fan assembly I found on craigslist for $50. Then I bought a wiring harness to add electric fans from Nelson performance and had my PCM custom tuned and had the fan option turned on.

I got quite a bit more than a 1-2mpg increase. With mostly freeway driving, I average 22-23mpg in my Suburban. I got slightly better last summer on a drive from the San Francisco bay area to Disneyland and back.
No why couldnt GM program that into these vehicles???

Actually I have an 01 and did the dual din dash conversion. I had to cut that bracket and a couple other things. Two years later and no problems.
Mine is in DVD format that has a program you install in order to view the information. I have it installed on the computer in the house, my laptop and the computer in my garage.
