02 tahoe Gas gauge issue

Hey I noticed the gauge cluster thread for 03s+ and it reminded me of my gas gauge problem. When it reads 1/4 left in the tank im damn near empty. I've been using the trip mileage thing to tell when im on the edge of crawling to an exxon. I was afraid to take it to a shop because the last car i had was a pain to take the dash off and ended up costing $600. Any ideas on what I can do? A thought i had was to wire up a secondary gauge somewhere but i have no idea what that involves. Thanks in advance for the help

Had a friend with a similar problem with his '98 Silverado - tank was empty when guage read just under 1/2. Shop ended up replacing the sending unit in the tank.
