01' Tahoe 260,000 miles;
Bought this unit used 18 months ago with a broken antenna.
The salvage yard antenna I bought came with cable attached to go all the way under the dash to the radio. Have you ever tried to change that out? How they made the transition thru the side/firewall (after ripping the dash out) I cannot imagine. I gave up and came up with quick fix #1;
I pulled the cable from the bottom of the salvage yard antenna and simply pushed the existing cable securely into the bottom of salvage yard mast. Worked perfectly until last weekend when I broke it off with the manual brush at the carwash. Man was I pissed. After a week I came up with quick fix #2.........
I drilled the top of the base of the antenna mast where it broke off. I got a mid size guage wire (don't ask me what guage) long enough to reach the passenger headlight, installed circular wire connecter on the antenna end and a female slot type connector with the plastic cover at the other end. I used a self tapping screw to anchor the wire to the mast base and tucked the rest of the wire under the plastic/rubber hood seal. The end of the wire is not exposed outside the hood and sits in the little happy place below the hood and above the headlight. At the mast there is only a clean little hex head screw where the mast used to be.
This fix may be too hillbilly for some and maybe it's part of an old post/fix; but I want you to know it works just as good as the mast did. Also, the mast is gone and makes for a cleaner look.
