What is the most effective & safe way to clean your engine?

I use Gunk engine cleaner and degreaser. Advance auto carries it. Just make sure your engine is cool, spray everything down, let it soak, hose it off gently, then I wipe down the larger components with a cloth. I'm a bit anal, so then I use armor all on the hoses and anything plastic. Just be careful not to spray the Gunk on your fenders or painted areas

and be careful of the alternator and other sensors that can be damaged by using that gunk

Simple Green work great. Just dilute it in water. Use a spray bottle to apply the solution on the engine. Let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse carefully with a low pressure water.
