SO, after discovering a broken Ring Gear tooth, while removing the inspection cover and getting set up to do seals and bearing kit....the old 10 bolt with 300k is done.
Came really close to a deal on the commonly sought after 14 bolt 6 lug unit out of a 93 k2500.....until the tape measure came out and it was from a 2wd donor and 5 inches narrower than my 4x4 10 bolt 8.5. :sad72:
^^^those 4x4 ones are a heavier direct bolt-in (with a conversion u-joint) !!!!!!!!---from everything i can research and find on the net anyway
there are a few lost and forgotten threads around on 10 bolt swaps but I am curious if anyone has recently gone thru with one.
My old 10 bolt is still under the Hoe with fresh oil after the discovery....and about an 85 mile haul to a relic 2000 Silverado... to remove a disc brake 10 bolt NBS unit...and haul it home in the back with no catastrophic failure.( I took it real easy off the lights etc)
So here sits the disc 10 bolt (8.6) with 2 inch wider spring perches, shock mount tabs that both look slightly different And dont incorporate the rear swaybar axle brackets.
what am I getting into??? LOL
well for sure there is cutting off the NBS 49" spring perches.....probably the shock tabs ...maybe the bumpstop pads.....and welding those OBS mounts on or new ones......
Then theres the rear disc conversion element which ive read is either going to require a adjustable proportioning valve and/or a NBS MasterCyl
.......
It was the correct 3.73 ration gear set (GT4) and had clean oil and great looking internals when I pulled the cover....so I Removed it and paid the seller 200bucks......50 less than my best costing on a ring and pinion set for the old 10 bolt and 160 for a bearing & seal kit.
Any comments are welcome and Ill post updates as I go in the swap and what I run Into.
