Today I went to leave work and when I turned the key, everything lit up as expected on the dash, but nothing happened. No click or anything. It was like trying to start the vehicle while its not in "park". I started messing with the gear selector and the ignition and it eventually started.
I got to the dentist's office and the same thing when I went to leave. Then I had to run across the street to the hospital to visit my wife's grandma and again; the same thing. I've been able to get it going by tilting the wheel all the way up, then I can lower the wheel again to the correct level before taking off.
Any thoughts on where I should start? I figure it's got to be something in the column. I'm not looking forward to it...

cripes dude. It sounds like a bad ground or something electrical causeing touble in the cloumn- like you said... any trouble with the cruise or turn signal, or ABS lights or anything going on?

Its weird what you say.. like a short on the column.. the way its intermittant changes with the position of the column...

No problems anywhere else, from what I've used. Blinkers, washers all work. I didn't have a need for the cruise though.

What about the neutral safety switch adjustment. Have you tried doing nothing but moving the shift lever around, or does it have to include moving the tilt wheel?

I can't remember for sure where it is. It may be part of the switch on the side of the trans.

The first time it happened, it seemd to work by moving the gear selector around, but after that, I had to tilt the wheel. I'll mess with the switch when I get a minute though. Any tips on what to look for?

crap! Now it started doing it even when I tilt the wheel. This is frustrating. I haven't had a chance to get under it and look at anything because I work all day and it's been wicked-cold here in the evenings. On top of that, the weekend is supposed to be downright bitter outside so I probably won't be able to get under it then either.
I want to check the ignition switch too, like the above poster suggested. Looks like getting to it is going to be a real bear though. Anyone have any instructions anywhere that give information on getting the job done?
