So I hopped into my 01 Tahoe with 71000k miles on it this morning, threw it in reverse leaving work and spun on some leaves from what it appeared becuase I was in a hurry to get home. While in reverse motion it felt as if the truck was engaging into park and I could feel the rear end semi lock up but continue to roll back . It would do this about every wheel rotation, feel like rear end get tight almost light going into park. I then put the Tahoe in park and tried to drive forward. same thing, the rear end felt like it was going to buckle or drag almost. So I stopped again, tried messing with the 4x4 becuase I just wanted to get home and it finally moved forward and reverse smoothly but now my Service 4x4 light is on and it wont engage into 4 hi or lo. What do you think it could be a U joint, please don't tell me something more serious, it's my first 4x4 . Thanks and happy thanksgiving!

If your 4x4 service light is on, sounds like your transfer case just took a flying sh*t. If it were your rear end, I'd imagine that you would have been stranded.

Time to take it to the shop. :ack:

Edit:

Please tell me your avatar is photoshopped? You didn't actually jump your rig, did you?

Honestly I don't know, but they aren't cheap. I'd imagine a complete rebuild would cost in the neighborhood of $600-$800, but again I dont know for sure. I just did a fluid change in mine and my tech buddy said that it's in really good shape. Hopefully I'll never have to find out.

For the record, these trucks don't like to be jumped like that...just thought I'd throw that in there, just in case that picture was giving you ideas, lol. ;)
