I just got my '05 Tahoe 5.3L so bear with me. I looked underneath at the exhaust and my muffler is a monster with a single inlet and dual outlet that immediately goes into a Y and back to single. WTF? So it is 2 into 1 into 2 into 1? Why would they do that?

Yep, that's correct. I'm thinking it may have something to do with performance and sound... When I got my Mangaflow... I got the 22" with single 3" in and single 3" out... and had the shop build me a tailpipe.

So unless you are doing duals or other nonsense, that is essentially a cat back?
Does everybody do it this way, or do some get a dual outlet muffler? Or is there room to cut off the Y and connect the muffler to the tailpipe?

How about this muffler: http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/shopexd.asp?zone=main&id=7813
Or this one:http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/shopexd.asp?zone=main&id=7816

For a direct drop-in... those wouldn't work. Stock comes in at 3"... but leaves at 2.5" (at least mine did...) Unless you want to spend the extra $$ on a cat-back... it's generally unnecessary on these trucks. A cat-back gives you 3" single piping... your Tahoe is most likely already equipped with 3" piping. I would do a muffler-back system if I were you (actually, that's what I did... ) Put in a 18-22" Single 3" in/out and have a muffler shop bend you a new pipe... throw a nice tip on it... and you're done. I LOVE the sound of my Magnaflow... it's not loud or obnoxious... it's got a BEAUTIFUL tone. I got a 3.5" rolled/angled 12" tip

They have 3" in and dual 2.5"s too: http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/shopexd.asp?zone=main&id=7815

Did your muffler shop have it on hand or did you bring it yourself. I don't want to be there and have the guy pull out a thrush or cherry bomb and say it is the same thing.

I told him what I wanted... he ordered it and had it ready for me when I got there. If you want Magaflow... make sure the guy knows it. If they can't provide that... go somewhere else, or buy it online. I found I could get it a LITTLE cheaper online at Jegs, but by the time I paid for shipping... I would have been about even. I paid $305 for my setup... out the door.

I was told by a few muffler shops that the reasoning for such a design is that the engineers must have had an issue with resonance, being that there is so mush enclosed space in our trucks, that a regular muffler caused resonance. He also told me that that was the reason that a flowmaster exhaust cat back kit comes with a muffler and a resonator.
