and Yukon Joe XL

I was wondering what would happen if one got the 2009 nav dvd, install the new software/firmware, and disabled the limitations. then re-inserted the old nav dvd.

Maybe the limitations would still be disabled. Can someone can try it and see??

I noticed this when I loaded the new nav disc a couple of days ago. I haven't gotten that warning screen once. Now when I'm driving when I first start out the destination screen has the option of putting in an address, but you gotta be quick cause it goes away in a few seconds. Then the address book option remains and you can enter a destination from that while driving, but the enter address option is gone.

hum? I guess it would depend on when you got your truck. The upgraded Nav dvd is released in Oct of each year. So in Oct 2008 the 2009 dvd was released, In Oct 2007 the 2008 dvd was released, etc etc.

my understanding is that "the vehicle" gets 2 free upgrades. EX: 2007 owners get the 08 & 09 dvds free. 2008 vehicles get the 2009 & 2010 dvds free. They keep track by the VIN.
They are suppose to mail out a postcard, but for some reason it doesn't get sent to everyone. I'm not sure what happens if someone never orders the ugrades, say in the case of a 2004 owner. Maybe they would still honor 2 free dvd udgrades. not sure.

I spoke with a rep today concerning the 2008 and free upgrade, and what he told me was that they determine the eligibilty for the free upgrades for the 08 models after the fiscal year. He told me that we should actually receive a post card for the free upgrade if we register with the nav site, but it will happen in mid or late january. He said if you were to buy the update now, your free upgrade would move to the following year. IE. buy 2009, get 2010-2011 free, or wait for 2009 and get 2010 free. I don't know how true this is, but that is what was told to me today.

well the nav site guys said that gm has nothing to do with the upgrade. when I talked to the rep he assured me that it is determined in december and we may get the free update in jan. I don't know how reliable that info is but that is what I was told. give them a call and see if you get the same answer.

Well, I tested it out with the "limitations" off and it's not what I thought it was. The capabilities of the nav don't change much between on and off.

First of all, with the limitations "ON" you are only allowed to choose a previous destination or the address book or one of your favorites when the vehicle is moving. When you slow down or stop--full function returns.

With the old system, I believe you could only choose from your favorites or one that had been voice tagged. I didn't find any other differences or additional functions.

With the limitations "OFF" you get the additional option of picking your destination from the map. To me this is useless because it doesn't help my wife find where the closest McDonald's is to the hotel we are staying at when we are still 3 hours away from the hotel.

To me the update is still worth it though because my old disc was so out of date. I'm also glad that I bought a Garmin Nuvi to supplement the factory nav because with it there are no restrictions at all.

I was reading the info on the GM Nav Disc site and the free updates only applied to 2006 and 2007 model year vehicles. Even though I bought my 2007 Denali in August 2008, I still qualify for the free updates.

From the site, under the 'subscription' tab:

GM is pleased to offer a subscription program including all new North American 2006 and 2007 model year GM vehicles (excluding Saab) with factory installed navigation systems. Owners of qualified GM vehicles will receive two (2) free update discs for the navigation system on your first and second anniversary. If your vehicle was purchased in 2006 you have until December 31, 2008 to take advantage of this offer. If your vehicle was purchased in 2007 the offer will expire on December 31, 2009.

I went over all of that, and I also am aware of GM stating what they stated, but I called the number on the website, and talked to several CSR's and they all stated that 08 registered owners will be notified at the beginning of the year if they are eligible for the free upgrade. They also said that we could contact them after the first week in Jan to check and see if the free upgrade would be allowed for the 08 owners.

thanks crazy.. must be the "We strapped for money" thing. "No more free stuff"

and Stargazer, sounds like you don't have all the features as the others. I'm guessing that you have the very same Nav DVD's? When ever i get mine I'll test it to see if I can go back to using the previous 2008 DVD once I load the new software/firmware from the newest 2009 DVD. maybe not.

P.S. check to make sure you have the 2009 DVD.

2009 NA CH/GMC900/SRX/DTS North America
The disc is currently back ordered
P/N 25974486 $199.00

2008 1/2 NA CH/GMC900/SRX/DTS North America
P/N 25912408 $199.00

2008 HAWAII CH/GMC900/SRX/DTS North America
The disc is currently back ordered
P/N 25850928

I current have the 2008 dvd and waiting for the 2009 dvd to arrive.
with the 2008 disc I can:

enter addresses, scroll through XM, mp3, POI's, etc, etc... up until I go over about 10mph. Then the screen dims and I can only select previous address or current stations currently on the screen. Movies: As soon as I take it out of "park" the warning screen pops up and does not show the movie.

When I called back in August, they ordered this one for me:

2008 1/2 NA CH/GMC900/SRX/DTS North America
P/N 25912408 $199.00

And their records show that's what I have.

However, they actually shipped this one to me:

2009 NA CH/GMC900/SRX/DTS North America
The disc is currently back ordered
P/N 25974486 $199.00

I current have the 2008 dvd and waiting for the 2009 dvd to arrive.

Judging, by your description, you may not notice much of a difference with the new disc. There are no additional functions from what you already have. My original disc was much older than yours.

I originally had the 2007 dvd, then in April 08 I ordered and received the 2008 dvd(released Fall 2007). I guess I'll soon see what the 2009 dvd(released Fall 2008):au: has to offer.

If not, I'll order the Lockpic unit and call it a day.

I have an 07 and haven't received a free update. Even plugged my VIN into the site and it offered to sell it to me for $200. What gives?

Did you buy the truck used, if so maybe it's only available to the original owner?

He just needs to call vs doing it online.

and hey..did you do any more testing on the new 2009 software? I listed what I was able to do with the 2008 software.

Hey, was the DVD movie software updated?

I'm bothered by the fact that when you're watching a movie on the front screen, the view sometimes gets smaller when you hit "FULL SCREEN".

Not sure if there was an update or not on the DVD but I know I could never operate the damn unit the right way and with the new disc I can operate it with ease.

Yeah for awhile it looked like we had a good thing going with this new nav disc. I figured out pretty quick that if your going over about 5 mph the "enter destination" tab goes dark and can't be used. Bummer!!
