I finally looked into this again. Trying to engage 4WD blows the 4WD fuse, #22 I believe, in the oddly named "convenience center."

I just replaced the radiator and in the process found the transmission cooler. I've got a filter kit and the solenoid people say is the problem. Waiting for a good chance to install them.

It didn't work for me. I turned it a little bit at a time and never got it to fire. Then I looked for timing light marks. :) I guess there are none.

The new starter took care of the problem. Strange. I have never had a starter that just gradually lost its power. I guess being so close to the exhaust had something to do with that. Thanks all, for the help.
