I've got a 00 with a 5.7 had the same problem I just took the lines out completely and put pipe thread plugs into the oil filter adapter where the lines coupled up.

I changed t case fluid about a month ago and it smelled a bit like burnt trans fluid and was a little dark but other than that it was pretty clean it wasn't full of junk

Any ideas on where or why??
