2007 Electrical Problem?

I have a problem with the radio/cd/clock/trim in the front. The clock cover has bubbled up and the trim has melted and distorted- it looks like a hot bar about a foot long was laid across the center of the radio. When my wife and I got in to go there was a faint odor of smoke. It was stronger for a few seconds when I started the car and the A/C started blowing but then dissipated. I took to the dealer and he plugged in his diagnostics and said the radio and cd player and clock still work and he removed the unit and said no visible electrical/fire problems on the backside so the damage was from an external source. That is not possible. I am picking up this afternoon and am afraid to park in my garage. Any possible answer other than external? Thanks-
