99 tahoe gear ratio

What are the pros and cons between a 3.42 and a 3.73 gear ratio?

depends. are you running stock everything? ie: intake, headers, exhuast, lift, drop, tires, etc

yes, everything is stock.... mine is a 4 door, 2wd, LS trim.... it also has a towing hitch and a 3.73 axle.... the air filter is a k&n filter and a flowmaster with a single pipe.....at 80MPH my rpms are at 2500...

The lower gear (3.73) will help get the truck going easier. It also helps to relieve some stress from the drivetrain when towing/hauling heavy loads. Fuel economy isn't quite as good, but not too noticeable from the 3.42s.
If you tow a lot, the 3.73s are a better option. For fuel economy on long trips, the 3.42 will be slightly better.

Is it normal for the tahoe to be doing 2500RPM at 80mph? it has the 3.73.

i think its pretty normal mine is about the same and i got a 95 with the 5.7 tbi engine and i do about 2400-2500 at 80mph. im not sure what gear ratio i got on mine though

I believe mine spins in that range as well at that speed.

Ok.... for a while I thought that my tranny was a bit messed up because i thought that the RPMs on a v8 should hover at 2000 when going at 80MPH... i guess this all depends on the drivetrain of the truck...:thumbsup: thanks guys.

i have 4.10 and at 80 im turning 23-2500 rpms.
