I did it on my X3 Racing lights, by wiring both sections in each unit to the trailer connector wiring.

so im gonna be THAT guy who bumps his own thread...

anyone want to try to make the tahoe lights light up like the avy ones? i think it makes it look alot better without having to buy some new brake lights....im sure this could be done on the cheap...just not sure how to do it or where to start (relay?)

Coincidence, I was just thinking about this thread again yesterday. And I got to thinking, if the top portion is only the tails and no brake light/ blinker, then that means it must be only a single filament bulb, like 1156 instead of 1157 (for example). If so, that means you could not just splice a wire or something because there is nothing for the circuit to light. So the only way would be to install a bulb socket that is set up to hold a dual filament bulb, which has an extra wire coming out of it. It shouldn't be difficult because the sockets would be the same size. But I think that's what we're looking at here. The good news is that once that was done, all you'd have to do is run the lower brake light wire to it (splice), there would be no need for a relay or anything like that IF you first made sure that the fuse is okay because the current passing through it just doubled (well, not double if the 3rd light is also on it). I imagine upping the fuse 5 amps from 15 would be okay, but would worry about adding 10 or 15 if that's what the circuit now required. In that case I'd want to run a new line, new fuse, and perhaps relay if necessary. But before I went through all that I'd probably want to go LED. But I really wonder why the hell Chevy didn't do it right in the first place!!!

I think the top is brake and the bottom is turn, so both would be dual filament. Not sure if an extra filament added to the flasher ckt would be a problem or not.

yeah the bulbs are dual filaments...i think its some simple difference in the wiring between a tahoe and a avalanche....i dont know too much about electrical stuff but i know it could be done/figured out really easily especially if we knew the exact differences between an avalache and an tahoes brake wiring

You're right I took a look at it, and then later saw one signalling and braking.

Yeah I don't know what I was thinking. But I'm sure it could be done a lot easier now.

So let me get this straight, if an Avalanche is on the brake with a blinker on, it has 2 solid brake lights on one side, and the other has one solid and one blinking from dim to bright? And its blinker is on the lower light same as ours? But our lower ones don't light with the brake, right? Sounds like you could do it but you don't want to just splice because the brakes would make the light constant even if the turn signal was on. It must use something like a relay, or flasher cuts the brake signal, for the turn signal to override the brake message, like so many other older cars where the brake and blinker lights were the same. It's hard to remember some of that stuff now. It would be nice, like was said above, to see the wiring differences and copy the Avalanche's wiring. Still trying to figure out why they did this, do you think it has anything to do with a Tahoe's 3rd brake light being way out back, where the Avalanche's is up at the "cab" or something?

I wonder if the Tahoe wiring harness was set up to be usable both in the U.S. and for export models in countries that require a stand-alone turn signal with a yellow lens. Anyone ever see a '07+ Tahoe set up for European delivery?

So you just bridged the 2 high filament wires? And the turn signal still works when the brake is on? I'm not sure how it was done but I keep thinking if you did it a certain way then it would now blink both upper and lower.
