Cam up grade Question.

OK, when I built the 360 in my Power Wagon, I chose my parts very carefully. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of buying go-fast stuff, and then to lose sight of what's really important.

Trucks are heavy, and they get lousy fuel mileage. So, the trick in your build is to make the MOST power (torque, NOT horse power) at the LOWEST rpms. If the engine runs out of steam at 5000rpms, who cares? You're not driving in the Indy 500. Have you ever really had your engine running that fast anyway?

The issue mentioned before about engine vacuum is a good point. The bigger the cam, the less vacuum you have. There are many vacuum pumps available to compensate for that if needed.

So, now- my build of my 5.9 LA engine...

Block- bone stock, fresh rebuild
Heads- early 1970's J915, hardened seats added, all new everything, Edelbrock springs
Cam- Summit 204/214 with a Cloyes double-roller chain kit
Intake- Performer, Performer AFB 1406 carb sitting on 1.25" phenolic spacer, 13x4" K&N filter
Headers- small tube, long tube, 2.25" diameter exhaust
Ignition- Mopar Performance electronic and Accell
Axel ratio- 3.91/1
Tire size- 32x11.5/15LT

Everything was tuned within an inch of it's life.

This truck hauled! It was insane quick (for what it was), was terribly reliable (10 years of daily driving, NEVER let me down ONCE!), and was the perfect blend of well researched parts/performance/value.

So, after all of this, tossing in a cam other than factory will gain you NOTHING if you don't have the rest of the things in line to match it all together.

Know what I mean? :)

i made a post last nite and it said that the moderators had to view it before it was posted. y??? n e ways i am not wanting to go fast, i am wanting pulling power if any thing, plus the entire bottem end is gong to have all brand new parts in it. the cam was the only thing factory so i wanted to change it, and of course upgrade it slightly. on summit i found this cam.

My opinion is that is WAY too much cam (duration length). You really only need something like that for high rpms. If you can stay in the 225 duration or less (regardless of the lift), you'll be better off, especially in a truck!

BTW, I don't even have that big a cam in my Charger! LOL

they dont have a cam with that low of duration for my truck. this is all cams offered for my truck....

they have six cams dsesigned for my truck. there are 2 maybe 3 cams that i can use with my factory heads

I like the last two cams you have listed. Mate them up with a set of EQ Vortecs with beehive springs and some nice, small stem valves, it should run real nice.

Yeah. Just make sure the cam is compatible with the computer. That's not a lot of lift and duration, so the heads will have no trouble with it.
