I am unfortunately having to replace the motor on my truck and I have a question that seems silly in my head but I can't figure it out.

I was thinking the easiest way to get the crank pulley off would be to do it while the motor is in the car with the transmission engaged. I selected 1 or 2 thinking it was like 1st or 2nd gear then went to turn the pulley but the motor still spins which got me wondering if you can even engage the transmission on an automatic that isn't moving... Does anyone have a tip on getting the pulley off or locking the motor in general?

Pull some plugs, fill the cylinders with water, put plugs back in.
