I have a 1996 tahoe 5.7 4x4 with 157,000 miles. I have only owned this vehicle a for months. I bought it as a toy but ended up being my to from work driver only 14 miles round trip. My question is what if any oil additives should I use to keep her running nice.

I am not too particular on filter, I find Wix and Delco to both be good, as well as K&N, Purolator, and the higher-end frams

Last oil change I used the Valvoline nextgen (the 50% recycled stuff) and it is working great so far, supposedly the recycled portion is better than the original oil was, considering it has been refined once (for its first life) and then again for its 2nd

I have thought of moving to synthetic but its an older rig and supposedly synthetics don't do as well to keep old seals swollen and sealed

Beyond that, make sure you have a good air filter, hit the heads with a little carb cleaner now and again, and keep your sparkplugs clean

Just like what others said, using a good engine oil and changing it on a regular basis is great insurance enough for your rig.

Oil and additives

I bought my Tahoe about a year ago as a weekend truck but enjoy it so much I now drive it to work and back. I work for an oil company and talked to some fokes and they said synthetics no longer have issues with seals, that issue has been worked out. So I settled on Mobil 1 High Mileage Full Synthetic 10w-30, with 1 bottle of Lucas additive. Not a cheap oil change but I have seen results. I change the oil every 3,000 miles and have noticed that with each change the oil looks a little cleaner that it did the last time. Thinking about changing the routine and using the Lucas additive with every other change. I think the oil coming out the change is about as clean as it can be at this point, the additive may be a little overkill at every change at this point.

Just in case you are wondering, I don't work for Exxon Mobil, I work for their competition, the oil is good.

If I use full synthetic there is no damn way I am doing 3k mile oil changes, a good synthetic should last at least twice that if not more (I follow the Oil life system in my '13 cruze and I get 7-8k on full synthetic and premium filter)

In the suburbans last oil change I used Lucas oil treatment, a bottle is $10 and there is enough to do a few treatments, I put a few ounces in the trans as well (its good for that too) and it so far is working great

I have had my Tahoe over a year now and this routine has really cleaned out the engine. Each change has looked better than the last. I think it is clean enough now that I can start to go longer between changes.

You can accomplish the same thing a lot faster by using the seafoam in the oil method for a couple changes, simply add 1/3rd of a can and run for a few dozen miles and then change the oil, breaks down deposits and cleans everything out, and its a hell of a lot cheaper than throwing out synthetic every 3k miles...hell, send me your used oil, I will run it through a coffee filter and throw it in my burb for another 3k miles LOL

My next oil change will be a delco filter and 5 quarts of mixed synthetic/standard oil and lucas, after doing another seafoam treatment

I will never run seafoam in my oil......

I really don't see a problem with it, not actually running it in a fresh oil change, but a few dozen miles before a change to clean things out shouldn't hurt

oil is full of good additives that were meant to work together in a handy all in one package....no need to add any more....

the full synthetic oil change every 3000 miles is getting cleaner because youre overchanging the heck out of your oil....change it every 1000 miles and youll clean it out even sooner....if that's what youre after...

the real advantage to synthetics is the ability to increase oil change intervals...youre changing your oil twice as often as you would need to with non-synthetic oil....

if oil is being changed at recommended intervals a cleaner like seafoam is not necessary
