your truck is just BEGGING for a 4L80E tranny. While your in there you might as well get it done.

But since you just did it 6 months ago, you should have some kinda warrenty, Right??

What's up with this 480LE tranny? I keep hearing it's name dropped every time a trans issue comes up.

The 80's are the heavy duty trans that is used for pulling heavy loads or if the horsepower is 500 to 1000.

They also are easy to swap in the trucks. :cool2:

Is this a straight bolt in swap? Would I have to mess with the cross member or anything like that? This may be my next big investment if it's easy enough.

The cross member would have to be modified, I believe the 4L80E is a tad longer. Also if you have a 4wd you need an different input gear for your transfer case (easy to swap). The driveshafts need to be modified (rear shortened, front lengthened). Also if you have a 96-00 vortec truck you can flash the PCM to control the 4L80E. As far as wiring you just need to change a couple of pins around in the trans pigtail and add two wires to the PCM for the 2nd VSS sensor. Its not that bad of a swap. If my built FLT trans ever goes, I'm swapping over to a 4L80E.

And where would I be able to find the details of this swap? Parts needed, exact modifications and all that.

It would be a good thing to have a friendly relationship with a local transmission shop.

I got to know my tranny guy real well, while trying to make the 4L60e stand up to big power. He enjoys the high performance details just becuase it is more fun than just repairing broken tranny's.

Anyway, on the 95, the cross member just slides back to the next set of holes in the frame. It uses the same mount as the 60. The trans is larger in both directions, length and width. I had a clutch and u-joint shop near by that shortened the rear drive shaft and changed the input u-joint to match the new diameter output shaft. They just had to make a new front shaft. They can't lengthen them as easy as they can just make a new one.

I dropped the transfer case off at the transmission shop to have the larger shaft installed. That is very easy for them. Then you need to lengthen the floor shift rod if it is the manual type.

The dip stick tube and stick need to be changed. I just bought a new one from GM. Other than that, I just bolted in the parts that my tranny guy handed me. I assume the flex plate was changed. The starter is the same

I already had the TCU controlling the 4L60e, so it was just making one different connection and setting the program for 80 instead of 60. I also had to adjust the shift points because of the very different ratios of the gears.

There was nothing that was difficult and it all went smoothly. The front drive shaft comes real close to the tranny, but clears just fine.

It is my next favorite mod to the truck after the hair driers.

Here are a couple of great places to get parts or help or entire transmissions.

http://www.rosslertrans.com/

http://www.transmissioncenter.net/4l80e.htm

I'm using rossler parts in my trans including their trans brake. If you want to go to a fully manual trans and not have to mess with electronics, check out the "Quadzilla" that Transmissioncenter makes.

I have been using the Midwest Converters's 3200 stall locking converter. It still needs an adjustment made, but I haven't had the time to deal with that yet. This is my daily driver and it will have to be down for a week or so to do the adjustments.

Can't say enough good things about the trans. It shift smooth as glass at low throttle and chirps the tires going into 3rd, when getting into it.

Check out those two web sites and you can get some ideas. Good luck.

The stock transfer case is used, but they need to change the through shaft. The 4L80e uses a heavier output shaft. The swap is simple for the trans shop. They had the parts in stock and it did not take them long to change.

It bolted right up to the 4L80 trans. :)

Damn TwinTT. You said things then I looked at your pics and forgot what I had just read.
You said the front drive shaft goes real close to the tranny, is that cause your stuff is lowered. Mines lifted, so I'm thinking I won't have to worry about that as much.

I just mentioned that because the 4L80 is wider than the 4L60. Your front drive shaft should not change with the trucks height. The trans and front axle are bolted solid to the frame. The independent suspension moves, but the axle and differential stays with the frame.

Or did you raise your truck far enough that you had to move the axel? :)

No. It's just a three inch. Though a six inch FabTech lift will find it's way up under there one day.
