Hello all. I'm new to the forum, but an owner for the past 1.5 years of a 2007 Chevy Tahoe LTZ. Recently, my instrument cluster has experienced a failure of the LED odometer - message center area, along with the gear selector display. All other above gauges seem to be working in the cluster. I can get the areas to light up after tapping on the unit, but they only return to dark a few minutes later. The mileage is still counting properly when I can get it to light up for a short time. I just had my recall work done today, which the local Chevy shop told me that GM is having major problems with the clusters on the 2007 SUV's. He also stated that he read today where GM is expected to file bankruptcy by April 1st (so much for the bailout money) and not to expect a recall on the odometers. I then asked if the recall on the rear washer unit had anything to do with my odometer failure and also if it had anything to do with the fact that my wipers (and washer fluid) had been turning on by themselves regularly while in the off position? He stated that this problem had nothing to do with the recall? Hum!!! But anyways, too bad I use my Tahoe for all of my business trips (pushing 80,000 now). No warranty and an estimated $750+ to repair. The tech manager at the shop stated that if I was thinking about purchasing a cluster myself, to think again (I expected that response). He mentioned that the clusters are "VIN Sensitive"??? My prior vehicle was a 2001 Yukon and I replaced the instrument cluster (also went out at 80,000) myself without any problems. Can anyone offer any suggestions or direct me to a thread where this has been discussed? Thanks in advance for any help.

Cluster

I had many of the problems you mention and I ordered a new cluster off Ebay and installed it myself for about $400, including the shipping, and it fixed the issues I was having. The cluster is VIN sensitive and will need to be programmed by the dealer, or shop of your choice. If you install the cluster at home and drive it to the shop for programming, the odometer will not display your old mileage-just the mileage you've put on the vehicle since you replaced the cluster. Apparently, if you want to display the accurate mileage on your new cluster, the installation and programming needs to be done at the same time. My odometer now reads 2500 miles but the Hoe has about 80 000 actual miles. Not sure what happens if I go to trade it...but I'm sure the pcm/ecm would have the actual mileage stored in it. Hope this helps.
