He said he doesn't have the panic button, which is why he is unsure of the presence of an alarm.

As far as I know, GM did not have factory alarm systems for these vehicles. I would hope the person you bought the truck from would have told you whether or not there is an alarm system installed on it, and would have given you the remote or something if there was one installed. If you are really unsure, an easy way to check would be to pop the hood and look for a speaker. Just a single speaker usually screwed to the wheel well or something; that would be your alarm speaker. Your horn speakers are in the grille, so any other speaker you find would be an alarm speaker most likely.

GM didn't offer a factory installed alarm system on the first gen models, only keyless entry.

The person who had my tahoe before me had an aftermarket alarm installed on the tahoe but it was programmed with the original key fob which is great and its a pretty nice alarm even hooked up to the original horn.

How about this one: I bought my Tahoe and there was an alarm installed on it by the previous owner. The dealership I got the truck from didn't have the alarm remote or the keyless entry remote, so... I had an alarm that had no way of controlling it. The only time it ever showed signs of life was when I would unplug my battery to do something to the truck. When I would plug the negative wire back in, the alarm would beeb or sometimes even go off.

So, I finally went to a custom alarm shop and tried to get a new remote for it so I could actually USE it. After inspection of the alarm brain, the guy told me that he had no clue what kind of alarm it was. There were no moarking or anything on iy... the only thing on it was a serial number.... but he said that wouldn't help him at all. That could be any company. So, I decided to call the previous owner (look them up in the phone book) but they were not home. I left a message but never got a call back. I never bothered calling back because I don't want to pester anyone.

I ended up just cutting the wires to the speaker. I'll install a new alarm somewhere down the road.
