I have a 96 Tahoe 4x4 about 120,000 miles. When stepping on the brake pedal it makes a sound like air is escaping. It seems harder to stop also. Any suggestions on what part is messing up?
Sounds like a vacuum leak in the brake master cylinder hose lines. Check the black box with the two hoses under the hood in the back right hand side. have someone hit the brake for you to see what's leaking. air is escaping, and the entire thing is run on vacuum.
Is the "air" sound when it is running? If you hear the "air" sound when it is not running, then that is just air escaping from the brake booster. If you hear this when it is running then it is most likely time to replace the brake booster.
A vacuum leak would usually be accompanied by a miss, especially at idle.
