is this noise normal?

I have a noise that sounds like a hard drive reading/writing, emenating from my center consol audio/nav cluster.

It will continue to make this noise even after the vehicle has been parked for days.

At first I thought it must be the nav unit reading data from the DVD Nav Disc, but to go on this long seems weird.

I'm concerned that something continues to draw power from the battery.

Any ideas as to what it could be?

Thanks

I've noticed the same noise whenever i get into the vehicle. It sounds just like it is reading the nav disc for no apparent reason.

I've noticed the same thing in the week that I've had my Tahoe and I'm fairly certain it is the Nav unit reading from the Nav DVD. I agree it's a little bothersome as it definitely seems like something that would draw down the battery pretty quickly. However, I'm also fairly sure that it stops after a period of time, and only re-starts doing it once you open the door to re-enter the Tahoe, as I tested it by sitting inside my Tahoe after turning the engine off and removing the key. After a minute or so, it stopped making the noise.

Maybe opening the door makes it "wake up" so it sounds like it's been doing it the whole time?

Same behavior on my Denali nav -- probably because it's the same nav, right? I noticed it a day or so after I first got it last year, and yes, it only happens with you either use the key-fob, or open a door; and it stops after a short while when you turn the vehicle off. It would be cool to know exactly what it's doing when you turn the vehicle off (why read the disc then?!?), and my guess when you open a door or use the key fob is that it's caching nav data into memory.

Any time you unlock or open a door, the Nav spins up the DVD to reduce the amount of time it takes to be ready when you get in. Kind of like your PC booting up if it sees you coming. ;)
