I posted the warning 4 hours ago, I would have thought it would have been taken care of by now.

I have been reporting tons of these this week using that red triangle icon - there has been quite a few different ones. Most are all out of the country - Yemen, Mexico and others. Didn't write down any names.

I didn't know there was a red triangle icon, never noticed, maybe I reported this wrong, but it got taken care of, THANK YOU. As far as the name I forget but I'd recognize it if I saw it.

Well, if I can get the IP addresses given to me, I will continue to ban the entire ranges till the whole country is banned if needed to stop this.

Thanks for taking care of this - must be sometimes that I am on so early in the morning compared to the mods especially if you are west coast and I'm midwest. Will document better for upcoming ones!

--Doh - Texas is not west coast - must just be an early thing!

Yea, I usually don't get up til about 11 a.m. or so most mornings:). Lately my first order of business has been checking for spam on our site for the past couple weeks.

Glad it's taken care of, but exactly how did you all get spammed? Did they send it via e-mail, or was it in the attachments on the posts?

I'd like to know. I consider this a safe forum to visit, and I never even give a second thought to opening PMs or attachments from members. I'm running a Mac, so a virus or spyware would pretty much do nothing here, but I don't need the hassle from my better half over a bunch of skin pics.

Thanks

I consider SPAM anything that is unwanted/unsolicited, nonrelated, and meant to attract business. This was a post under a popular thread that had a video link with a very graphic pic and then a loooong list of other topics and treats that are neither appropriate nor wanted on a site like this. I've seen it on another site I frequent and would imagine it's becomming a problem on lots of sites, a noob signs up just to post garbage like that. I don't know how you'd solve it other than a mandatory waiting period before you can post, but then they'd just sign up then come back after the time was up, plus that would punish legit guys like us. Maybe a filter could be set up that grabbed all posts with certain buzz words, but then I'm sure that's a very time consuming endeaver. I imagine all we can do is what we are doing, report them as soon as we find them. I'd never noticed the red triangle so I just created a thread asking someone to take care if it. If I run across another I'll use the "report this post" link. Back to your original concern, I tend to ramble, I would assume attachments and PM's from legit members who have been on for a little while should be okay but then I guess there is always the chance someone could hijack a username. Wonderful times we live in huh?

SpaM

Mods will block his IP, and he'd have to go to another physical location to send messages to the forum. If nothing else, it will stop him from doing it from his parents' basement.

It's good to know that the SPAM was just linked into the letter. At least it was not a bogus link or e-mail intended to trick people into inadvertently clicking into some porn site with massive pop-up windows and spy-ware auto-downloads. Jeez man, why not just go post that crap where it belongs? I've been coming here a year now, and I've only seen a hand-full of blowhard idiots get banned for language and just general dumb-ass comments.

This is a great forum, and I have no doubt that the mods will take care of this situation. They're right though, that we have to do our part and report it, warn each other about the SPAM, and not click it. These mods have lives too, and I would not expect them to be waiting by the phone so to speak to fix issues right when they arise. They'll get to it when they get to it.

Have fun all. Thanks again for clearing it up, and cleaning up our site.

BH
