Winter is here and I know a lot of you have been looking into having a remote start system installed. Being a mobile electronics certified tech for over 15 years I thought I'd give my opinions on which system(s) I think is better than most.
I'm sure most of you have heard of Viper. Viper is a brand name manufactured by a company called DEI (Directed Electronics Incorporated), which have been in the automotive security/convienence integration market for many years. I have installed numerous brands of alarm/remote start systems throughout the years, including "factory" dealer installed systems. From my experience, I feel the DEI systems are by far the best systems out there in terms of reliability and functionality. They offer a limited lifetime warranty on their control units, have the best tech support in the industry, and the flexibility and intergration options on their units are second to none. With the 791 remote start/alarm model, you get a LCD paging remote that tells you which zone has been violated(doors, shock, trunk, hood, etc), confirmation of arming/disarming/remote start/aux channels, as well as backlight, vibration, and beep functions. The range is good up to about 1/4 mile. You have numerous aux channel options that can be programmed to be latching, timed, or momentary outputs, which allows a great deal of flexibility when adding options such as defrost, heated seats, lighting control, wipers, etc. You can have the vehicle start every few hours on its own in extreme conditions to help keep the vehicle's battery and engine in good condition. If you stop at a store for a few minutes and do not want to shut the vehicle off, you can take the keys out of the ignition while the engine continues to run, which is especially useful if you have a diesel engine. There's so much you can do with this and other Viper RS units. The newer systems use digital spread spectrum technology versus RF, which takes the useable range of the system up to one mile!
DEI engineers and manufactures parts to integrate with the factory immobilzer systems and databus and LAN protocols our vehicles use, so integration is seamless and reliable.
They also have stand alone remote start models available to integrate with the factory keyless systems, as well as existing aftermarket alarm systems so you don't have to purchase a complete remote start/alarm package. You can just use your existing key fob/remote.
I'm writing this because I currently have the 791 system on three of my cars and they are great. I've had Code Alarm, Ungo (by Clarion), and Audiovox in the past...way past. And DEI is the way to go. Hope this info is useful for some of you.

hey jk, i have what i think to be an older' viper model.. all i know is whats on the back of the remote.. RPN codes? and some fcc id? but anyways, i was wondering if i can just upgrade my remote and add a remote starter to it? it seems to function pretty well so i was hoping i could stay with the same control unit.

I need to know the model number on the unit so I can tell you which remotes are compatible. Either way, you can add a stand alone RS system to whatever you have.

No matter which system you have, whether it's factory, aftermarket, new or old, the stand alone remote start version can be added to any system using your existing remote, so you won't have to carry around two seperate controls.

hey JK,
Thanks for all the info! In your post you state that there are units available that allow you to use the factory key fob with a remote start. I have a 2003 Tahoe with Lock, Unlock, and panic. How would i go about using my factory remote and which DEI models allow it, in particular Viper models since thats what i have available for good prices. Would you use a triple press on the lock button, or use the panic button or what? When wiring the modules, would you tap into door lock, unlock wires, alarm wires or what for a signal? Also, would there be anyway to have maybe 1 or 2 aux channels with the factory remote with button combinations or not a chance?
Thanks for your help

This topic is timely for me as I'm about to have an alarm system installed in our "new" to us 2006 Yukon Denali XL. I'm planning on another Auto Page. I've had one in my '04 Sierra since it was about a week old and I've been very pleased.

I don't mean to start a debate over which alarm system is best but I have a question regarding the installation of aftermarket accessories such as an alarm system and how that might affect the factory warranty and an extended warranty. I'm considering an aftermarket backup camera as well that will display through the nav screen. I understand that all this will require connecting to the vehicle's systems and in the case of the camera installing an unlock device (which ain't cheap I'm finding out). What's the consensus here about how stuff like this affects warranties?

Thanks much

Take a look at the 160. It comes with two remotes, but you can integrate it to activate from your factory remote. Only thing is that you will not be able to control any aux functions from the factory remotes. The remote start usually gets set up to activate with a couple presses of the lock button on the factory remote to start and shut off the engine.

The Magnuson-Moss Act is a federal law that prevents dealerships/companies from voiding or not honoring any warranty due to aftermarket products unless the damage is proven to be caused by the aftermarket product.
So if you have a b/u camera installed and the door locks stopped working weeks or months later, the dealership cannot refuse warranty repair just because of the alarm or camera, unless they can prove that the installer tied into the circuits wrong or did a bad job directly causing the locks to quit working.

You are amazing, JK. Thanks for the info, that's news to me. I can imagine that at one time that was a real issue, manufacturers blaming some problem on anything aftermarket.

Well fellas currently on my 03 tahoe i have the clifford matix 1 mile range, which is made by the viper company, very good unit, it starts from a good distance and hardly ever has false alarms. I've had for a year now and no problem. On my 95 9c1 caprice i have the marksmen 11 alarm and auto start system for 5 years which is the same as auto page 850 also a very good unit and no problems over the years. Now there's a new auto page 1000 with the same technology as the viper/clifford 1 mile range units, except the autopage 1000 has many more features, this would be my next choice when i get a next vehicle, just my two cents

I have a compustar 2W900FMR in my 2002 Yukon and I also had one in my 2006 F-150. Great remote start. Great features. I don't have the alarm / remote start model. Mine is just for remote starting.

Jk,was wondering if you ever dealt with compustar alarms,I was searching around and it seems the compustar is slightly favorable over the viper:confused2: I myself like the remote on the compustar than the viper,it also has a button lock feature witch is good for false triggrring,I like the button layout on the side of the remote,http://www.compustar.org/products/P2WSSR.htm

First i just wanted to say Thanks JKmotorsports for the great advise...

I'm curious about the install of the 160XV systems for my 2004 Tahoe. I've always installed my own stereo systems but never an alarm or remote starter, - are these units terribly hard to install?

Thanks,
- Mike

These are more complicated than a stereo. If you don't integrate the alarm properly, you can damage the bcm, ddm, and/or pcm. Especially being a 2004 model, there are more ic modules than older models that are easily damaged. There is a part you will have to purchase and install in addition to the remote start that will integrate into the DDM (driver door module) and Passkey system. Compared to most vehicles, the GM trucks are pretty simple. I can install the 160 in under an hour, but I've been doing this for almost 16 years. I would advise taking it to a professional to be installed just for the simple fact that alot of the circuits you need to integrate into are low current IC circuits that can be easily damaged. Paying $200 to have it installed is far cheaper than the few hundred that can be spent replacing damaged parts.

I just dropped $650 on a clifford 50.5x and I couldn't be happier. Drop the money on a good system and please don't have it installed at a best buy unless you know someone there and are certain they know what they are doing. I started my truck from the middle of the aurora mall today and by the time I got outside the seats were nice and warm, nothing better when its 20 degrees outside.

The Clifford is nice. The exact same as the Viper 791. DEI bought out Clifford a few years ago and all the Clifford products are the Viper, just different remote case. Good decision on having it control the heated seats. I hooked mine up the same way, and damn is it nice to get in and sit on some warm seats!

Yeah I'm stoked about it, I think I'll wire up some extra stuff this summer but its too damn cold to do anything right now. The peace of mind having a good alarm for my baby is well worth the cost, the remote start from a mile away is also pretty baller.
