Honestly, I had a 1994 GMC Jimmy and that thing rocked. Not saying I would take it over my Tahoe, but those mid-size GM SUV's from around that era would not die. That truck I had went through hell before I got it: the boddy barely passed inspection, the ABS was faulty, the transmission only worked like 2 gears (I think 3rd and overdrive?), but that thing would not quit. 4-wheel drive worked great and that thing just did whatever I wanted it to. Did some heavy off-roading with it before I finally got rid of it, and it didn't even bat an eye at it. I think it had 192,000 miles when I got rid of it? Not positive.
I will third the 4runner. My girlfriend's family had a 2000 Toyota 4runner, and they had until 2007 and it was great the entire time. Her father had no complaints about it at all. He put tons of miles on and hauled people, junk, boats, trailers, you name it. It was a little cramped inside, but that is the only downside I can think of.
My friend's parents have a 1998 Dodge Durango, and they bought it new back in 1998. they still have it to this day and it runs just awesome with well over 200,000 miles. It has never had any major problems as far back as I can remember... and my friend's family are well-to-do, rich yuppie-types so they probably would have gotten rid of the thing long ago if it had a lot of problems. It is also a weird kinda vehicle... because it's a mid-size SUV (at least, the 1998 - 2003 models were), but you could get it with a V8 (magnum 5.2 or 5.9) and it had good power, but the real kicker is how comfortable and roomy it is inside for a mid-size. It's like inbetween a mid-size and full-size.
As for the Tahoe? I love this truck. It's powerful, adaptable, and does whatever you ask and asks for seconds after. They do have some flaws though, sadly. These trucks have an Achiles heel in the tranny department. A friend of my brother's has a 1996 Yukon Z71 two door and he is on his 3rd transmission. I mean, to be fair he does beat on it... but that is what you should expect from a full size SUV off-road package with a V8 built on a full-size pickup truck frame: a drivetrain that takes a beating. These trucks also have rear main seal problems. But that aside, I would never in a million years second guess my truck or go back on it. I wanted one for over a year, and then finally bought one of my own and that was back in Summer of 2007. I still am excited to drive it and am grateful I have it and very satisfied with it's ride quality, capablity, and looks.
I plan on being the last owner of this vehicle.
