That wire is supposed to incorporate a fuseable link. You should include a fuse when replacing that wire from the battery to the alternator.

Are you talking about that faint rattle, when it is cold, that you hear around 1500 rpm,s or so, just as it shifts from 1st, to 2nd? And, it goes away when the engine is warmed up?

The 97 is totally controlled by the OBD2 Computer. It reponds to all of the inputs from the various sensors from throttle position, to manifold pressure, mass air flow sensor, engine rpm's, temperature, etc. If I were you, I would visit a transmission shop. It may just be a solenoid not...
