My 1996 Chevy Tahoe w/ 171K miles just started to intermittently stall (engine shut down) when accelerating from a stop or signal. It's become very scare and dangerous. I'm fortunate enough that the truck has enough momentum to coast while I drop the transmission into neutral to restart the engine.

There is no jerking, hesitation or noises exhibited by the engine. It just shuts down completely.

No other problems are exhibited. No Engine light is displayed. Truck runs fine except this problem. I can not drive my truck for any distance.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what might be going on?

Thanks,
~Vic

Check all your basics like your battery, cables and alternator cable. I remember a 98 Silverado I worked on had the same symptoms and ended up being the positive battery cable was bad and when you revved the engine under a load it stretched and caused an open circuit in the charging system. This and the battery was bad.

Also, fuel pumps goin out every 100k miles on those is common. Check fuel pressure when it does this, i bet your pump is hella loud huh?

Had a 96 2-door Ho do the same thing your talkin about, after droppin the fuel tank we found the ground cable inside the tank was bad and causing a poor connection to the pump. You could also check that too.

Pull dist. cap and check for side to side movement of shaft. any movement will cause engine to shut down. If there is any movement replace dist.
