I have a 2004 Tahoe, 4.8L with approximately 66,000 miles currently.

About 2 months and 2000 miles ago the check engine light came on.
Went to my local AutoZone shop and rented a OBD-II sensor. The
code that came up was P0442- a quick reference to my Hanes manual
read "EVAP System, small leak detected."

The clerk told me that most likely the leak was coming from my gas
tank cap- either I didn't tighten it down all the way or the rubber seals
on the gas cap were going bad.

Just to give you a quick reference at around 20,000 miles I changed the original gas cap with a locking unit from the dealer.

I wanted to make sure that it wasn't the gas cap that was bad
before I dropped another $35 so I cleared the check engine light
and decided to wait to see if it came up again.

Fast forward to 2 weeks ago and 2000 miles later- the check engine
light comes on again. This time I figured I would just go ahead and
replace the gas cap so I went to my local dealer and got another one.

As a side note, the sales guy told me that GM made two different
versions of the locking gas cap depending on the application. I made
sure that the one he sold me was the correct unit for my vehicle.

Funny thing is when I compared it to the one I originally replaced at
20,000 miles I discovered that it was different from the one I bought?
There is something on the groves of the gas cap (sorta like a triangle
shape design) that makes it different...

Well, today the check engine light came back on. I'm getting a bit
frustrated at this point. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks in advance!

I'd say it's not yer gas cap, man. Sounds like the EVAP cannister / fuel pump might have an issue. Either way, it's time for an appointment with the service folks so they can fix it for real... You notice any major decline in fuel economy lately?

Yeah, I figured by now its probably not the gas cap...

I didn't notice any major decline in fuel economy, but again I have't really been checking.

How much is it typcially for the parts and labor to replace a EVAP cannister or fuel pump?

Thanks.
