The truck ran fine with out the tune....much better with it. It really is a drop in replacement, the tune just wakes it up. As for a weak link, haven't found it yet. I replaced the tranny at the same time, stock one. I can honestly say i drive the truck hard, but also take care of it very well.
I am no expert on tuning, but a custom tune works way better than a chip or proagramer. Tried and still have a hyper tech.
Weak parts on these trucks is known to be the rear, an upgrade to a 14 bolt is a great idea also.
For custom tunes research pcm4less, wheatley and a few others. Another good forum with a TON of info is fullsizechevy.com they know a lot over there.
