Hardwiring an aftermarket NAV?

Unfortunately I don't have the OEM Nav. So I've considered purchasing an aftermarket (especially Nuvi) NAV to have. However, I wouldn't like having to "remount" the device everytime I wanted to use it. So my idea was to have it mounted in the upper left hand corner of the windshield because I think that's a cleaner look and you wouldn't be able to see the NAV because of the tint on my windshield.

But, I wanted to know has any one tried this? I'd like to do it myself rather than going to an installer.

I still have the 2005 Avalanche and the Nav is still there. Picking up a 2008 Tahoe today and decided to get the factory nav in light of the availability of those lockpick units and in light of the fact that on the trade in for the 2005 Suburban, the nav unit retained more value than the car!
