So, originally, my problem, my truck would make a popping noise when ever I made tight turns. So I thought CV joints. Eventually the problem got worse, even popping when ever I laid into the throttle, then sometimes when it shifted gears. Then if it went from accelerating to completely letting of the throttle it would let out a pop. But it was mostly whenever I made turns. It was embarrassing to drive through a parking lot.
So today I replaced the half shafts. But the problem did not go away. So I spent the money, the afternoon and the pain on replacing parts I didn't need to. :cuss: :cuss: :cuss:
Oh yeah, and by popping, I mean it sounds like I'm shooting at some one.

My friend who helped me, who was a mech at a GM dealership, thought we had to pull the ball joints apart. We didn't end up having to. But while we were trying, they wouldn't budge. Rock solid. I'm about 180 hanging off a pry bar, while him at 220 was beating 'em with a dead-blow. Not even so much as a twitch.

I'm sorry, but it sounds like you blew your spiders in the rear-end, or even blew a axle gear.. - mine wouldn't pop so much going just str8 either and only when turning then it just kept getting worse and worse.. and then it was un-drivable - and keep in mind when i say rear-end there are two of those under it if its a 4x4.. front and rear..

Are you talking about the ring and pinion gears? Or something worse?

The ring and pinion would be the "worse" gears imo - spiders and axel gears would be the easy ones

How would I go about trouble shooting this? Can I pull off the differential cover to take a look see, "Oh, yep, it's all beat up."

Yea, you can - just gotta remember, it has a seal on it, that you will want to put back - i used RTV Silcon to re-seal my rear-ends - and also it takes fluid.. it may be time to service them any ways

Service and upgrade the parts I think. Are there any brands that would be recommended? I was planning on eventually upgrading the drive train from the transmission out. I guess I'll go the other way.
