Finally burned through the new FREE tank the dealer gives you with the truck and got a mere 250 miles to the 26 gallon tank? avg less than 10mpg driving like an old maid with my 3 year old and 5 year old and pregnant wife in the truck. How in the world is this correct. I know winter blend is bad for gas economy but this BLOWS. Is this normal guys? Driving is mostly stop and go city/suburb type driving. This pig is going to swallow 400/month in gas!!!

give it a change to break in. once they do you should plan on an average of 15 mpg.

Follow these 9 steps to enlightenment.

Ah yes. Welcome to my world.

1) It gets better.
2) Change your oil for Mobil-1 as soon as you're past the engine break-in period.
3) It gets better.
4) Use 93 octane fuel; yeah its more, but it'll get you further down the road, and your per-mile operating cost will be ever-so-slightly less.
5) It gets better.
6) Consider some upgrades. Performance programmer, intake, exhaust. They will ALL help, and with the cold winter months here, a programmer is a quick way to boost economy and performance.
7) It gets better.
8) I know it's obvious, but you really have to keep your foot out of it.
9) It gets better.

I know someone will add some steps there, but hey, what I'm trying to say is:

It gets better.

Welcome, and enjoy your new truck! Oh yeah, you might wanna switch that DIC over to the odometer or something more "tolerable". :D

Yep...I only got about 9 -10 miles per gallon for the first couple thousand miles of pure city driving...7 miles per day. Finally took a 400 mile road trip and now at 4000 miles getting about 14-15 mpg....it takes some time to break in, that is for sure, but do it right.....easy on the accelerator.

Dude, I drive it like a girl now. The foot is far from "in it". It hasn't even seen 55mph yet. Manual says anything over 87 is a waste of money. I would consider synthetic but have you really noticed a fuel efficiency change from oil?

I guess it is only break in so I will wait it out.

It's your best bet, patience is a virtue, I am up to 36,877 miles, and my average MPG's are 16.8 and still climbing, I was at 16.6 maybe a thousand miles ago. Hang in there and just be patient, it'll start panning out for ya. Good luck and welcome to the GMT900 gang.....

Dude, chicks drive nutty around here! Yes, improvement from oil and gasoline is for real. Between the two, you might +.5 MPG. Worth it in my book. Try driving like a grandpa. That's how I get 'er done... :smilielol:

TO the OP was your brand new, i presume it was as you bought an 08, when i bought my 06 it had 30 miles on it , at first i started out with 8.9 mpg, went through the break in and jumped to 10.1 figured that just went with the territory, get to 5,000 miles and i got to 13 mph, now at 34k miles i get about 16.5 city and on long trips using cruise control i can see on flat (sunny day) roads 17. mountains with cruise control i see about 16.7 maybe 16.4 if their steep grades.

just listen to everybody else, IT WILL GET BETTER, DONT PANIC. just gotta get thew those first few weeks.

I didn't buy my tahoe for its excellent MPG. I bought it for looks, saftey, looks and saftey did I mention looks already. anyways I get about 13 mpg with 35's. may be you have a lot of stops and go's but that is not normal give a couple more tanks should get better.

Is this weird? When my 07 was brand new (not broken in) I got 16.2 mpg on the freeway. Now that it's broken in (2500 miles) the mileage has gone down to 15.8 freeway. What's up with that?

acully it is as the seals get broken in and all the pistons loosen up, as the engine gets run all the parts loosen up and it makes it easier for the engine to run. So yes it does.

I'll be looking forward to that. Thanks bro. Any idea why the freeway mileage dropped 3/10 from when it was brand new though??? My driving habits haven't changed, just the mileage. :confused2:

Still on my first tank and we're at about 13.5 mpg.............I too am hoping that after some breaking in we can get to around 16 or so...........but hey, at least it takes regular instead of the premium we have to put in the SS for 14mpg on a good tank! LOL
