We've had a 2007 Tahoe LTZ since June 16th; 2500 miles on her so far. My question is about extended warranties:

1) When to buy? Should I get one now, while the car is new, or should I wait until we're a few more miles down the road? I've read that we should do it before 12,000 miles.

2) What to buy? I'm confused as to what to get, because of what we have so far (3yr 36,000 & 5yr 100,000 powertrain). The bottom line is that as the car ages in the late years of ownership (years 4 onward), I don't want to pay anything for anything that could be covered by a warranty, BUT I don't want to overbuy and get covereage that we have with the existing warranties.

Thanks for any replies; this forum is a MUST for serious Tahoe owners.:Chevy:

I do believe that the price will go up once the vehicle hits 12,000 miles, and then again, once the vehicle hits 24,000 miles.

As far as coverage, you just need to figure out how many miles you will drive per year, and then how long you plan on owning the Tahoe.

Poop on this is to buy within 1 year or 12,000 miles.

Heres a QUOTE from a dealer GMPP policy, for my 2007 Vette. A Tahoe should be lower , but you can get the idea. Dennis is well thought of on the corvette forum and his prices were top notch. You can Call him or send him a request via e-mail.

As an example , my selling dealer for both the Tahoe and the Vette, wanted $890 for a 60 month / 50,000 mile/ 0 DED policy. Take a look below and see how much Dennis gets for the very same POLICY !

Just remember, AND VERIFY THIS, the extended coverage period starts the day you buy the Policy, NOT the in-service date. So , if you buy a 50 month policy in the 11th month, you're covered for 50 + 11, not 50 + 36.

Hope this helps.

PLEASE NOTE: You are able to purchase the plan at a lower new car price if you have owned your vehicle less than 12 months and have less than 12,000 miles on the odometer.

Term, miles and deductible desired:

We are pleased to accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express.

As requested, here is the information and pricing on the General Motors Protection Plan.

About the plan:

As an independent new car dealer, Fichtner Chevrolet is authorized by General Motors to sell the GM Protection Plan. We are offering the plan at a significant discount without sales tax. This amounts to a discount of several hundred dollars off the MSRP of the plan!

Major Guard is a policy of General Motors Corporation. Be very careful of policies written by other companies that may no longer be in business when you need them! There have been hundreds of these companies going broke in the past. In addition, this policy is good at any GM dealership in the U.S. and Canada. The vast majority of dealerships will not honor any policy except those sold by General Motors. The GM Protection plan protects your vehicle and assures that it is repaired to GM standards whenever necessary. Second, the plan is completely transferable to subsequent owners of your vehicle adding to the vehicle’s resale value. The GM Protection Plan comes with a money back guarantee of satisfaction. You get a full refund if you cancel the plan within 60 days of purchase and no claim is filed. After 60 days, your refund is prorated less a small administration fee.

Major Guard provides 24 hour no cash needed towing and roadside assistance. Major Guard will authorize towing or emergency road service for any disablement of your covered vehicle, or will reimburse you up to $50 for these expenses. Benefits include towing, flat tire service, battery jump, out-of-gas fuel delivery and locksmith and key service. Major Guard will pay the charge to rent a replacement vehicle whenever the new vehicle limited warranty or Major Guard covered repairs require 2.0 or more manufacturer’s labor time guide hours to repair.

What does Major Guard Cover?

It’s as simple as this: If it’s not on the very short list of what’s not covered, IT’S COVERED.

WHAT’S NOT COVERED?

Maintenance services and parts, physical damage, glass, lenses, seal beams, light bulbs, and tires. Components not installed by the vehicle manufacturer. Bumpers, sheet metal, body panels and parts. Carpet, hinges, trim, upholstery, convertible tops, molding and bright metal. Air and water leaks, wind noise, odors, weather strips, squeaks, rattles, paint, rust, carburetor, contaminated fuel system, exhaust system, catalytic converter, brake drums and rotors, shock absorbers and batteries.

WHEN CAN I PURCHASE GMPP?

Any time as long as your vehicle is still inside the new vehicle limited warranty, PERIOD. Major Guard time and mileage limits start on the same day as you purchase the plan and from the odometer reading the day you purchase the plan. Again, You may purchase the plan at any time but such coverage must be purchased prior to the end of the new vehicle limited warranty of 36 months or 36,000 miles whichever comes first. It makes sense to return to your selling dealer, but if you find it inconvenient to do so, you may use any commercial repair facility, just refer to the Coverage Agreement for the appropriate phone number to call for authorization prior to repairs being started.

Major Guard can be purchased from any GM dealer. To save big dollars, buy it from me here at Fichtner Chevrolet. Many dealers mark up Major Guard beyond GM Suggested Retail Prices by several hundred dollars. We sell every plan at a discount saving you hundreds of dollars!! Major Guard is honored Nationwide and it doesn’t matter where you buy the plan.

No Poop on this 12,000 miles thing. If you go to the website and read the details there are two different pricing points. Cars that have been in service for 12 months or less and have less than 12k miles on them qualify for "new" pricing...anything over that is considered used. So it would appear that the best option would be to buy before 12,000 miles.

Thanks for the contact though.
