First, I painted the Rivnut with three coats of paint with a detailing brush over several hours. Then, I put a small dab of silicone in the hole and inserted small plastic plugs I found at Lowe's. They fit very snug against the rivnut and sealed it well. After letting the silicone dry for a day, I painted the heads and edge of the rivnut again with three coats. Between the silicone and the paint, the inserts are very snug without being unremovable in the future. I'd prefer to have had the smooth skin from the factory, but there's no other really good way to remove those without causing a lot of effort and expense.
