"Service 4WD" Warning Light

My 02 Tahoe has just started to intermittently flash the Service 4WD warning light in the message center. I took it to the dealer and he told me the light had to be on when I brought it in to run the codes. I think that is BS. I have an OBDII scanner but it doesn't read transmission codes. I believe the codes stay resident until cleared. Am I wrong?

Anyway I hope this is not an expensive fix or just a routine service. Has anyone had experience here? The mileage is 92,500. Thanks for help.

Ya wouldn't happen to have a part# would ya? I get zero results in both gmpartsdirect and ebay.

So, you in the USCG? I was in for 4 years as an ET1 in Bermuda for 3 years.

I sure would... GM PART # 15136039. This is not the exact part made for our trucks, its a 03+ suburban/Yukon XL. But its the same damn thing, just has black buttons instead of gray. Bermuda? What units are out there? Thats cool though, another coastie. Im a AET, but Ive been stuck in Bermuda a few times on SAR cases when we were out of time and couldnt go home. LOVED IT OUT THERE! Really expencive, it was like 55$ for a steak. But I bet the Per Diem and BAH was great because of that right?....

I went to my mechanic buddy tonight and we confirmed through his scanner that the switch is acting up. I just ordered from above. Thanks for the help.

I was in Bermuda quite a few years ago. I was a Loran C Tech and Bermuda had a Loran monitoring Station there right across from the Navy base. It was expensive but the biggest dilemna I had was where to go on vacation!

Well, have fun. Waxing that big bit-h is a pain. I never had to wax a full size before. It really sucked for me because I took my side running boards off, so doing the top was rough. Bring a few beers.

Simple way.....open the sunroof and stand in the opening. You can reach almost the entire roof from there. Puts it at waist level as well. :Chevy:

I changed the switch yesterday (kudo's to Coastie Kyle!) for the 4WD options. I bought the parts using the part number provided here from www.gmpartsdirect.com. It was $53 and change shipped from Winston-Salem NC. As expected, the switch buttons are black instead of grey but who really notices. It took all of five minutes to change including removing the pop-off bezel around the instruments. My buddy cleared the codes with his OBDII tool and so far so good. It changes from one mode to the other much faster now. I am still going to open up the old switch to see if I can spot a cold solder joint, loose wire, loose component etc. My thinking is opening it destroys it but I have to see. Thanks for all the help.
