AARGH! (correction its an 03)

Again my 03 tahoe lt decides it doesnt want to start... or i should say it starts and then dies...

I'm pretty sure its my fuel gauge ... shows 1/2 tank doesnt seem to be stuck... or anything... but when i turn the key the fuel pump i can hear sounds like its sucking air....

has anyone had this problem before or is this a known issue or somthing?

I know there was a bullitin about tahoes instrument cluster being faulty.. like speedo and rpm... but what about fuel gauge?

Any suggestions? I hate having a gas tank strapped in the trunk...(it USED to work fine fuel light and all)

thanks!

well i am currently fighting with chevy about it. I took the car in under the warrenty letter and they told me its the fuel sending unit. I doubt it because a scan with the tech 2 (at my mechanics shop) showed that the sending unit was showing 94 % but the gauge cluster was showing over full !

Also the way Chevy diagnosed it was by a sweep scan for the problem which upon some reading says that for this issue you CANNOT use a sweep scan. the results are inconclusive.

So im going to put in the sending unit.. and if that doesnt fix the problem *i wont hold my breathe* then chevy will be covering the cost of that unit as well as replacing my gauge cluster... other then that i love my hoe.. just having a 5 gallon walmart gascan in the back that has proven itself to leak all over me kinda of ruins my day !

I'm going to put in my fuel sending unit tomorrow and see what happens if the issue continues or not

Sending unit

When I got my "00" Yuk a few weeks ago the gas gauge did not work. They said this was a common problem with these vehicles. They fixed it and everything seems fine now.

The gas guage sending unit on my '00 Tahoe 5.3 went bad at 63K miles in 2005. My fuel pump whines when at just under 1/4 tank reading. It has done that for about 5 years now, but the dealer keeps telling me that this is "normal". Of course it is more like BS, but you know the story.

As stated above, I believe this is fairly common to these years of trucks.

Just read that GM has come out with a new gas "additive" on one of the sites. Have not tried it yet in my truck, but I am planning to do so to see if it helps the whining situation.

Saved it, and am pasting below.

Hope this helps.

GM Fuel System Treatment PLUS, Fuel Sending Unit Corrosion and Fuel System Deposits #05-00-89-078 - (Nov 9, 2005)

2006 and Prior All GM Cars and Trucks

2003-2006 HUMMER H2

2006 HUMMER H3

2006 and Prior Saturn (Canada Only)

2005-2006 Saab 9-7X

GM Fuel System Treatment PLUS
GM Fuel System Treatment PLUS, P/N 88861011 (for U.S. ACDelco, use 88861013) (in Canada, 88861012), is now available.

Added Benefits and Uses
The PLUS portion of GM Fuel System Treatment PLUS is the addition of a filmer additive that, when used regularly, can protect fuel system sending units from the corrosive effects of certain sulfur contaminants found in some of today's gasoline.

Sulfur contamination can disrupt electrical continuity of certain fuel sending units and lead to erratic or false fuel gauge readings. With scheduled usage, GM Fuel System Treatment PLUS protects against the effects of harmful sulfurs in gasoline.

You Get Four Benefits
One bottle of GM Fuel System Treatment PLUS added to the fuel tank at each oil change:

Cleans -- Sulfur corrosion from fuel gauge sending units.

Prevents -- Harmful sulfur components from attacking sensitive fuel system electronics.

Protects -- By coating metallic surfaces of the fuel system.

Removes -- Engine deposits left from use of poor quality fuels.

GM Fuel System Treatment PLUS will replace the original GM Fuel System Treatment, P/N 12345104 (in Canada, 89020804). The original formula may still be available for a limited time, and provides the excellent Fuel System Cleaning aspects of the new product without the filmer.

Just put a fuel pump module in my 03 Tahoe as well. Did everything said above. Would crank and then sputter and cut off. Also, gas hand would go all over. Since the fuel pump module has the send unit and the fuel pump, the module fixed both problems. Thing that gets me is that I went ahead and replaced the fuel filter while it was apart, and it was pretty bad. Problem is, I just replaced it less than 10k miles ago. I don't live in a harsh, dirty environment, so what gives? If the fuel filter is getting that clogged that early, its putting a lot more strain on my fuel pump. I definitely don't want to keep replacing that fuel pump!

yah thats terrible if its a fuel filter like the in tank ones that go right over where the hoses go... that is probably the fuel your getting is crappy.. or had some garbage in it.... i would prolly drop the tank clean it out completely.. and hten not go to that gas station again ... my filter was 100 % clean :(

so far it says im down to 1/4 tank ... if i have the issue again tomorrow when i go start my car ill be angry... but SO FAR so good * crosses fingers*
