It's a tray thats about the size of the Cd player that comes out of the hole. IIRC its quite deep as well.

i keep my remotes in mine that i got out of the junk yard(pocket item)free!!!
the cd was taking up valuable storage after changing the radio.

Metra also makes a replacement pocket for the cd player. Look up Metra 88-00-3302. They run around $14 plus shipping

I just covered mine, from the inside, with a piece of black metal that I painted and will be mounting a tomtom/magellan navigation bracket to it. Perfect place if you can turn the unit to face up towards you.

First, i bought a sheet of that replacement mirror, and made my own box in that whole.. looked sweet - 3 blue LEDs.. but.. got tired of that - i picked the Pocket up from the Parts Dept. at the Local GM/Chevy place.. pretty cheap.. i like it a whole lot better
